Since 1999, Pearl Street Brewery, which was then located in the basement of the Bodega in downtown La Crosse, has had it’s annual anniversary celebration in many different forms and at many different locations. The very first Winter Ball in 1999, took place at the Bodega. It has also been held at Bluebird Campground, Westby Rod & Gun Club, El Coco Loco (closed), twice at the Jorgenson Farm and many times at the brewery.

According to Brewmaster Joe Katchever, the decision to have this year’s Winter Ball outside was primarily so people could celebrate while still following safe social distancing rules. “We had some very successful and responsible outdoor events this past year.” He says, “we are Wisconsinites and Minnesotans and having fun outdoors in the Winter is in our blood.”

Precautions being taken include contactless check-in, limiting capacity, sanitizing stations, and single use drinkware.  The full list of rules and regulations will be available at the Pearl Street Brewery website and app.

Pearl Street Brewery’s 2020 Community Hop Harvest Ale is Brewed!

For over 10 years, Pearl Street Brewery has collected hops from local, backyard hop-growers for use in their “Community Harvest” Ale. The annual small-batch brew uses hops from everyone to create a single batch brew. While the beer style changes from year to year, it’s always brewed with locally grown hops.

Pearl Street Brewery invited area hop growers to bring in their crop to the brewery to be included in this year’s batch and, for each pound of fresh-picked hop flowers brought in, the grower received 1lb of beer (pint) at the time of donation and 1lb of Harvest Ale beer after it is brewed (available now in the tasting room).

Pearl Street Brewery will donate proceeds from every pint purchased. Area pubs and restaurants will have the opportunity to participate too; by serving the beer throughout the winter. Proceeds from the beer will benefit the La Crosse Warming Center and provide meals for the guests.

This year’s beer is an English Mild Amber Ale (5.1% ABV 11 IBUs) which includes a blend of community-sourced hops. The Pearl Street Brewery Tap Room and area restaurants will have the opportunity to serve the beer throughout the winter.

Pearl Street Brewery Celebrating Small Business Saturday and Observance of Small Brewery Sunday!

Pearl Street Brewery Celebrating Small Business Saturday and Observance of Small Brewery Sunday!

On Saturday, November 28, 2020 locals and visitors to La Crosse County may bring in receipts totaling $20 or more from purchases made on Small Business Saturday at any of the independently owned small businesses in La Crosse County and receive a free beer from Pearl Street Brewery. *Limit one pint per person.

Pearl Street Brewery has been a proponent for using local ingredients and products since its inception 20 years ago and wants to reward those that “Shop Local” in La Crosse County this 2020 Holiday Season.

Pearl Street Brewery Celebrating Small Business Saturday and Observance of Small Brewery Sunday!

Also, Small Brewery Sunday, a holiday for beer lovers to celebrate local breweries on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, returns on Nov. 29.  Pearl Street Brewery welcomes beer lovers to visit and get specials and deals on local beverages.

During one of the busiest holiday shopping weekends of the year, celebrating the big impact small businesses have on local economies is critical. More than two-thirds of Americans live within 10 miles of a brewery, and in 2019, the craft brewing industry contributed $82.9 billion to the U.S. economy, employed more than 580,000 Americans, and provided charitable contributions worth more than $80 million. Amid the pandemic and economic crisis, however, many breweries have experienced declining sales—about 22% down in the third quarter of 2020, according to a recent Brewers Association survey. The survey also reported that approximately two-thirds of at-the-brewery sales during the third quarter of the year occurred outdoors, indicating winter will be the make it or break it season as colder temperatures arrive, outdoor service moves indoors, and many small brewers struggle to survive the lasting effects of the pandemic.

Pearl Street Brewery Celebrating Small Business Saturday and Observance of Small Brewery Sunday!

“This has been a devastating year for craft brewers. They’ve faced shutdowns, decreased sales, layoffs, an aluminum can shortage, and our most recent member survey revealed only 78% of small breweries are confident that they’ll still be open at this time next year,” said Bob Pease, president and CEO, Brewers Association, the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small brewers and organizers of Small Brewery Sunday. “As shoppers support local independent businesses, what better place than your local craft brewery. Six packs, gift cards, or merchandise all make great gifts and every little bit helps. It’s crucial for beer lovers to support their local brewery, taproom, or brewpub throughout these next few critical months and beyond.”

“Nothing goes better with a holiday meal than independent craft beer,” said Ann Obenchain, marketing director, Brewers Association. “Whether you are able to safely visit a brewery, taproom, or brewpub, or opt for curbside pickup or at-home delivery, one of the best ways to support your local economy and brewery during the holiday rush is by giving the gift of craft beer and serving craft beer at the dinner table.”

Beer lovers are encouraged to share their Small Brewery Sunday experiences on social media with the hashtags #SmallBrewerySunday and #SeekTheSeal and tagging  Pearl Street Brewery’s social media handles and/or hashtags

Pearl Street Brewery’s Seasonal Release of Gosecopia made with Wisconsin Cranberries

Seasonal Release of Gosecopia made with Wisconsin Cranberries.

Pearl Street Brewery is releasing another seasonal favorite in early November. Gosecopia is Pearl Street’s sour Fall ale and one of four seasonal Goses brewed by Pearl Street each year.

During the brewing, the beer is naturally inoculated with wild, native microbes. This traditional brewing process dates back thousands of years and is still used today in some of the most exclusive beers in the World. Pearl Street founder and Brewmaster, Joe Katchever points out that this, “natural, terroir fermentation doesn’t just create an inviting sourness, but also connects this beer to the land and to each person in the community.” Gosecopia is  fermented on natural guava, mango, and locally sourced cranberries.(5.3% ABV  3.5 IBUs).

The cranberries were recently gathered from Arendt Cranberry Company, in Nekoosa, Wisconsin. The family run farm utilizes the newest technology to improve upon the tried and tested methods used by farmers for countless generations.

Bill Arendt is a second generation farmer who has been farming in Wisconsin all his life and is the  operating partner and manager at Arendt Cranberry Company. Since 1984, Bill has run the cranberry operation with his father and two others, adding acres, cleaning, receiving, transportation, fabrication, and processing fruit. Bill’s wife, Suzanne Arendt who has degrees in Wildlife Management and Soil Science, developed and implemented an integrated pest management system to increase productivity while reducing the farm’s dependency on pesticides. Suzanne operates the Quality Control laboratory where they ensure the quality of not only Arendt cranberries, but the cranberries of dozens of other Wisconsin growers. Every growing season since inception has seen them expand this small farm into one of the most well respected farms and businesses in the Nekoosa area.

The Seasonal Gosecopia will be available in stores in La Crosse County and around Western Wisconsin and will be available on tap at the Pearl Street Brewery Tasting Room. Gosecopia will also be available in La Crescent, Winona, and south eastern Minnesota.

Bars and Restaurants interested in putting Gosecopia on tap or selling it in bottles can contact Pearl Street Brewery.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Pearl Street has followed Health Department recommendations by limiting capacity, increasing shared-space sanitation, encouraging mask-wearing, and making their own, “social distance spot savers”. They have also expanded their outdoor patio space so patrons can enjoy their beverages outside!
