Now collecting hops for the 2020 Community Hop Harvest

2020 Community Hop Harvest

For over 10 years, Pearl Street Brewery has collected hops from local, backyard hop-growers for use in their “Community Harvest” Ale. The annual small-batch brew uses hops from everyone to create a single batch brew. While the beer style changes from year to year, it’s always brewed with locally grown hops. Pearl Street Brewery is inviting area hop growers to bring in their crop to the brewery to be included in this year’s batch and, for each pound of fresh-picked hop flowers brought in, the grower will receive 1lb of beer (pint) at the time of donation and 1lb of Harvest Ale beer after it is brewed.

Flowers only, please! No stems or leaves.

Pearl Street Brewery Tasting Room will donate proceeds from every pint purchased. Area pubs and restaurants will have the opportunity to participate too; by serving the beer throughout the fall and winter. Proceeds from the beer will benefit a local nonprofit.

Interested restaurants and locations willing to sell the beer may reach out to Tami at Pearl Street Brewery.

Six Pack Exchange Program Update

downtown brown ale beer Pearl Street Brewery La Crosse, WI

Pearl Street Brewery (PSB) has set a Tuesday, September 8, 2020 deadline for its Growler Sustainability – Six Pack Exchange Program. For 13 years, in an effort to sustainably produce beer and encourage recycling, Pearl Street Brewery has been accepting clean, undamaged six-pack carriers for re-use in production in exchange for free growler fills in the Tasting Room.

The change is in part due to the nationwide shortage of beer packaging materials due to COVID-19, and Pearl Street Brewer’s recent acquisition of  a canning line.

Until September 8, 2020, patrons and supporters of Pearl Street Brewery can bring in 10 clean and undamaged six-pack carriers (any PSB beers) in exchange for a free growler fill in the Tasting Room. After the deadline Pearl Street Brewery will only be accepting six-pack carriers of the brewery’s flagship D.T.B Brown Ale. Limit on fill per person per day.

Since 2007, Pearl Street Brewery believes it has recycled 52,000 of six-pack carriers and given over 5,200 FREE Growlers

Pearl Street Brewery will still continue its Pint Programs where customers can bring in one clean, undamaged six pack carrier with a recent receipt from a local store, and receive a free pint in the tasting room.

Other recently released canned beer includes V|O Haze, and Supreme Fatty, Linalool IPA, D.T.B Brown Ale, Shitty Lyte Beer

The canned beers are available in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa and in the PSB Tasting Room which is now open and is  taking the necessary COVID-19 precautions.

Carryout is available and encouraged.

Learn more about the Recycle for Beer Program

Over the last 14 years, the Pearl Street Brewery community has recycled six-packs in exchange for growler fills at their Tasting Room. This has resulted in a reduction of the consumption of an estimated 41,600 six pack carriers! This has been a reduction of nearly 10,000 pounds of paper pulp from trees used in packaging of our beers.

Pearl Street Brewmaster Joe Katchever created this program back in 2007, when PSB began packaging beer in bottles. Disgusted by the vast amount of waste involved in single-serve packaging, Katchever found a way to bring environmental awareness and reduce consumer consumption and the brewery’s carbon footprint. To reward customers for recycling and to foster this program, Pearl Street Brewery has given away 20,800 gallons of beer at a cost of around $500,000 in the last 16 years.

“The ocean and the landfills are full of disposable, single use packaging material. I did not pursue packaged beer for over eight years because I didn’t want to contribute to that,” says Katchever. “I felt the Recycle for Beer Program was a great way to keep people aware of their consumption of throw-away packaging material and reward them with beer for acting in an environmentally responsible way.”

Pearl Street Brewery is transitioning much of their packaging to cans, which are friendlier to the environment, Katchever says, “To be honest, I am convinced that canned beer stays fresher, longer and if you combine that with the reduced environmental impact, it’s a no-brainer.”

After 14 years, The Recycle for beer program is coming to an end. The last day Pearl Street will be accepting empty six-pack carriers is September 8th. If you have been saving Pearl Street six-packs, now is the time to bring them in for a growler fill at the Tasting Room.

After the deadline Pearl Street Brewery will only be accepting six-pack carriers of the brewery’s flagship D.T.B Brown Ale. Limit on fill per person per day.

Applefest is one of the oldest festivals in the Coulee Region, dating back to 1949. Applefest was created to celebrate the community of La Crescent, and promote the apple industry. The tradition remains strong, even now. Though the festival has been modified to not include the major crowd gathering events, the board of directors has chosen to continue to reach out to the community through smaller events, in safe settings. It was important to the Board of Directors during this time of social distancing, that the community does not isolate itself from families, friends, neighbors, and area communities.

Without the support of the La Crescent area, and the Coulee Region community, Applefest would not be able to provide fun and  friendly entertainment for all ages year after year. In addition, scholarships are awarded through the Royalty program. In an effort to continue this tradition, even through a pandemic, the board asks once again for the community’s support through the purchase of a “Fest in a box”. Goodies for all ages are included. Many of the items in the box are sourced from locally owned businesses.

About Who Gives A Fest

The purpose of  “Who Gives A Fest” is twofold, the festival hopes to fill the void of live music in La Crosse, WI in the hopes of giving the local entertainment industry artists a chance to showcase themselves; while raising money for the Sprout for Kids Foundation to help area bars and restaurants affected by the Covid 19 shutdown.  Funds will also be shared with Punk Rock Saves Lives who focus their work on Human Rights, Equal Rights, Health Concerns, and more. One of the keystones of the music community, especially Punk Rock, is the ethos of taking care of one another. By championing this ethos through various campaigns, each hand-chosen by the artists, Punk Rock Saves Lives can elevate their messages of hope, activism, and change to effect positive change and drive awareness.

About Coyote Kid

Cinematic is the word most often used to describe Minneapolis based Coyote Kid (FKA Marah in the Mainsail). The sound is dark and mysterious at its core. With layers upon layers of dynamic turns, from the hopeful highs of “Fox hole” to the guttural darkness of “the Great Beyond’. Between Durry’s true grit voice, and Cassandra’s tender subtlety, you’ll find a vast array of narrative and stylistic possibilities. With imposing and wild jungle drums, soaring brass horns, growling bass, and shimmering spaghetti western guitars.

About The Homeland Conspiracy

The Homeland Conspiracy is an intensely driven rock band that formed in the underbelly of the Midwest as a voice of reason in early 2011. Self-classified as an “aggressively progressive wake up call to the modern music agenda.” The Homeland Conspiracy says what they mean in songs like The Bailout, River Killer and 60 To Thrive. Each song is different from the next and you’ll hear influences from bands such as Helmet, Queens Of The Stone Age, Black Flag, U2 and Rage Against The Machine. Collectively T.H.C. shares 30+ years performing experience and remains active in their communities by playing charities and helping those in need. They have shared the stage with several national acts such as The Midnight Ghost Train, Royal Bliss, Another Lost Year and Lullwater.

Linalool IPA Brewed by Pearl Street Brewery is Now Available in 12oz Cans

Pearl Street Brewery Announces More Fan Favorite Beers Moving to 12oz cans

Pearl Street Brewery has released another bottled favorite in cans. Linalool IPA, the only IPA brewed with Northern Discovery® hops. Featuring a crisp golden yellow color, and the unique aroma of lilac, pear, and bruised apple.

Linalool IPA is brewed with this rare species of hops that was discovered growing wild by a UW-Madison Horticulture Botanist, who was also a homebrewer. Upon brewing with the mystery hop, he also discovered that it made good beer. The family began cultivating this new hop variety on their Madison area farm and their curiosity got the best of them. They had the plant genetically tested to determine which strain it was, only to discover that it was not genetically identical to any commercially available strain of hops, making it a unique variety.

With a unique genetic fingerprint and 2.5 times more linalool (an aromatic compound that gives hops their essence) than any commercial variety. Northern Discovery hops are produced by a single Wisconsin grower — and Pearl Street Brewery has the exclusive rights to use this unique, indigenous hop variety, and it is featured in their Linalool IPA.

When Linalool was first brewed by Pearl Street Brewery, they were only able to brew it seasonally since there were not enough Northern Discovery hops available to meet the demand for the beer year-round. Since that time, production has ramped up to meet the demand for this unique and popular Wisconsin brew.

According to Brewmaster Joe Katchever there is science behind the aromatics in Linalool IPA. “the linalool molecule actually bonds to a carbohydrate found in the beer forming what is called a glycoside. Glycosides are odorless and tasteless but during aging, the molecular bond breaks and the linalool is released into the beer and you can smell it. By carefully controlling the pH of the beer, we can maximize the formation of glycosides.” ( 7% ABV  60 IBUs).

Other recently released canned beer includes D.T.B Brown Ale, Shitty Lyte, V|O Haze, and Supreme Fatty.

The new beers will be available in La Crosse County stores and in the PSB Tasting Room which is now open and is, of course, taking the necessary COVID-19 precautions as it states on their website:
